LSUS was first established as a two-year commuter college in 1965.  The campus is located on a 200-acre tract of land along the picturesque Red River in southeast Shreveport.  Junior and Senior level courses were approved in 1973/1974 and the first class was graduated in 1975.  Since then the university has grown to offer nearly 40 undergraduate degree programs and 12 master’s degree programs.  Students have access to an online course management system, Moodle that makes course materials available to them 24/7.  Maintaining up-to-date technology throughout the university classrooms and high-traffic public areas is a top priority.

The university also works closely with the community by sponsoring centers and institutes that serve as valuable economic development and educational resources to both students and community members.  Among these units is the Center for Business and Economic Research, Small Business Development Center, the Institute for Human Resources and Public Policy, and the Red River Watershed Management Institute that is receiving growing national attention for its benchmark wetlands research.

Recently, the university has focused attention on strengthening extracurricular student activities by holding on-campus festivals, staging musical and comedy concerts in their Strand Theater and Municipal Auditorium, and reinstating sports programs such as men’s and women’s basketball and women’s soccer.  All of these improvements and the continued focus on quality education continue to enhance the reputation of the university and the student’s educational experience.
